“Segmenting Turning Techniques”
By Dale Green
Dale Green, of Aledo, will present our January program on “Segmented Turning Techniques”. Twenty years ago Dale started turning segmented vessels and though he spent about five years turning green wood, he limits his turning activities now to only exploring the world of segmented objects. Using the table saw with a special sled that he has designed to cut the segments, he composes how each piece of the vessel fits his design with the aid of a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program.
Cutting really small pieces on the table saw can sometimes result in surprising and even dangerous kickbacks. Dale has developed a special technique that has been extremely successful to eliminate these kickbacks.
As a result of Dale’s hobby, his vessels have been given or donated to some of the most important people or organizations you can imagine. None of his work has been for sale because he gets his reward from “Psychic Pay”, which is worth more to him than anything else.

“The Art of Thread Chasing”
By Mike Gray
About me: I have lived in Tyler for over 30 years. I have been married to my lovely wife, Gail, for 32 years. I have served in the U.S. Air Force. I retired from the Tyler Police Department in 2011, And currently work for Tyler Junior College as a Police Officer.
Woodworking History: I have worked with wood in various disciplines for many years. I have been woodturning for just over 2 years. I began turning due to an accident involving my table saw. While I was healing I started playing with my lathe (less chance of re-injuring my hand.). I found my true woodworking love in turning, and as they say "The rest is history."
Philosophy: My Philosophy is simple. I believe that God has given each of us gifts, and that when he made the tree He did the best He could. So I believe we owe it to him to do the best we can with those gifts. I love to learn, as well as share what I learn. I feel that this is one of the greatest traits of this community.
Specialties: Hand Chased Threads in Wood, Fine Finials, And various Tool Techniques.
Accomplishments: I have been fortunate in my short career. I have several art pieces in collections in South Africa, Las Vegas, and numerous pieces locally. I have been chosen to show in local juried art shows. I have been commissioned, and donated, two pieces to a local charity auction. And have just started doing demonstrations.

Starting at 3 PM until 6 PM our Open Shop will be your opportunity to visit with our Mentors and learn hands on about the things in which you are interested. There will be a number of lathes stationed about our meeting room with someone who can help you with just about anything you want to learn. There will be a couple of sharpening stations with Mentors to help with your tool grinding issues. Several lathes stations will feature everything from bowl techniques, skew techniques, spindle issues, hollow form techniques, segmented turning issues, and much, much more.
Hot Dogs and drinks will be available for purchase to ward off that nagging hunger you might get during the long special day.
Got surplus tools, and any item of value that you don’t need any more? Put a price on them and offer them for sale during the Open Shop or the meeting to follow.
If you have Tips or Tricks you think others might like to use, call John Horn at 817-485-7397 so he can arrange to put you on the program for the club meeting following the Open Shop. We would like to hear from you about the things you have found useful around the shop. We all have some idea or item we can show to others that would make their woodturning experience better. Your presentation should not be more than about 5 minutes or so because we expect a number of our members to show a wide variety of items or ideas that others may not have experienced. Even if your idea is not your own, but you found it useful, share it with the rest of us. Help us celebrate the experiences you have had in your woodturning adventure.
